Case Studies: Commercial Water Softeners
Pacific Water Technology recently commissioned a new water softener at Algester Lodge Nursing Home, located in the south-western outer suburbs of Brisbane. Their commercial-scale kitchen was experiencing ongoing problems with scaling in their dishwashers and steamers. They exhausted all options, including polyphosphate filters and magnetic water conditioners, to no avail; and service calls continued, with ongoing costs to repair the equipment. A solution was urgently required, and Pacific Water Technology was able to provide a long-term solution in the form of a commercial water softener. Since commissioning the commercial water softener, the staff have noticed an immediate improvement. The scale build-up progressively reduced to a point to where there was none, and there were no more clogging of nozzles and no more equipment downtime.
The water softeners work on the principle of proven ion exchange technology, and provide many years of reliable operation with minimal maintenance and operator intervention. The water softener features an automated control head, which facilitates automatic regeneration of the ion exchange media, as well as automated backwash and flush sequence. The water softener is equipped with a turbine flow meter enabling the regenerations to occur when the media is saturated; based on volumetric usage, rather than timer-based regeneration. The resultant water savings are an added bonus, therein saving money and preserving a scarce and valuable resource.
The water softeners are very easy to maintain and only require the occasional top-up of salt in the brine container. The control head has been programmed to do the regeneration and backwash sequences at set intervals, in order to have the unit working optimally at all times. The control head also features diagnostics, allowing the user to determine critical data such as total water usage, average flow, frequency of regenerations etc.
How this affects you
The water supplied in most states in Australia is hard (high level of calcium & magnesium), therefore containing a significant amount of minerals that have a tendency to form lime scale in hot water systems and circuits. States including Queensland, New South Wales, South Australia and Western Australia are all noted to typically have hard water. Commercial water softeners not only offer benefits in a commercial kitchen, but also laundries as well.
Benefits of water softeners:
- The appliances last longer
- Energy Savings due to reduced cost of heating
- Removal of iron
- Removal of lime scale
- Reduced necessity for soap
- Softens and brightens clothes
- Fewer spots on dishes
- No more soap scum to clean up
